Obama and Gay Marriage

You knew it would come to this. Face it, with the news going on this week, what else could I possibly write about? For those of you who don’t know, President Obama announced that he supports gay marriage reversing the opinion he has held since the late 1990s. Now we could go on and on about how both Obama and Romney have flip-flopped on the issue of gay marriage. But this is my wish. Please, please, please DON’T make your decision this fall because of the issue of gay marriage. Whether you support gay marriage or not, this country has a lot of more important things to worry about. We have a struggling economic recovery. We have a deficit. We are still at war with Afghanistan with an uneasy timetable for withdrawl. Seriously, with the world in its current state, gay marriage is going to an important issue? I will not be voting for President Obama this year just because he supports gay marriage. I will not be voting for Romney just because he doesn’t support gay marriage. I think we all need to look at the issues. Approximately 50% of the population supports gay marriage and a slightly smaller precentage doesn’t. This nation has been divided for years. Please, let’s not let something that should be decided on a state-by-state basis divide us even further. If the Founding Fathers were alive, they would be throwing up over what we’re fighting about.

Speaking for myself, I am a Christian. I am straight. I also tend to lean towards the left of several issues. I support same sex marriage. I believe that my gay and lesbian friends should be entitled to the same rights as me. It isn’t always easy. But I remind myself, how are these people any different from me? They aren’t.
